Bobby Marshall – Growing Old Gracefully

Psalm 90:10, 12 – Realize that time is limited.

Psalm 92:13-14 – Flourish in the Lord… “stay green.” We will stay firmly rooted in our spiritual life when we stay “planted” in the things of God (Jeremiah 17:7-8).

Deuteronomy 34:7 and Joshua 14:10-11 – Our spiritual eye should not dim, neither should our spiritual strength diminish. Never stop being a servant or an evangelist and remember that attitudes matter.

There are many examples in the Bible of fruitful people that are very old. We should never get to an age where we say, “Well, Lord, that’s it for me.”

Thomas Amos – The Practical & Spiritual Importance of the Church

An explanation of  the practical importance of the church body and its relationship to us and a description of the spiritual importance of the church body and its relationship to Christ.

The physical importance of the church:

  1. Communication
  2. Accountability
  3. Discipline
  4. Mutual prayer (Acts 12:12, 1 John 5:14-15, Isaiah 65:24)
  5. Bible study and discipleship (Malachi  3:16)
  6. Mutual worship (1 Peter 2:4)

The spiritual importance of the church:

  1. It is His vehicle for expression on Earth (1 Peter 2:9, I Timothy 3:15)
  2. It is His body – The church completes Christ (1 Corinthians 12:12, Ephesians 1:22)
  3. It is the object of his love (Ephesians 5:23, 25-29)

“If we could but realize that the dearest object in this world to our Lord Jesus is His church, we would spend less time in peripheral activities and concerns. Our efforts would then be directed toward the up-building of the local church where we fellowship, and our love would reach to every member of His body. Thus we would be caring for that which He loves most in the world.”

Mark Daniels – Propitiation as a Noun and Verb

Luke 18:13 has a few surprises when the Greek text is examine. The biggest surprise is that the word translated “mercy” is actually “propitiation.” Here is the Young’s Literal Translations:

And the tax-gatherer, having stood afar off, would not even the eyes lift up to the heaven, but was smiting on his breast, saying, God be propitious to me–the sinner!

Mark uses this verse to illustrate how propitiation can be a noun: grace, mercy, and a price paid. He uses Romans 3:25 and 1 John 2:2 to show propitiation as a verb: appeasing the wrath of God, justifying believers.
